Independent Educational Evaluations
We offer IEEs in the area of occupational therapy. This is a comprehensive assessment completed by a qualified professional, a California licensed occupational therapist who is not an employee of the school district.
What is the purpose of an IEE?
Provide an objective, independent assessment of the student to determine the need for educationally necessary occupational therapy services as well as possible accommodations, adaptive equipment and assistive technology.
- Parents and guardians have the right to request an IEE if they disagree with the school’s assessment.
- IEEs are provided at public expense, which is paid by the student’s school district.
- Parents have the right to choose their evaluator.
- The IEP team must consider the results of the IEE when developing or updating a student’s IEP.

OT IEEs at Foundations Therapy Service are provided by Julie Zito, OTR/L, and director/owner. She received her initial NBCOT certification in 1999 and began working with a wide age range of clients. In 2001, she specialized in pediatrics and educational occupational therapy. She has a high demand for her assessments due to her thorough and thoughtful work evaluating students with exceptional needs.

What does that mean?
Occupational therapy is a support service that helps students with disabilities access and benefit from their education.
It supports their participation by addressing the relevant areas that are impacting their ability to learn and interact within the school environment.
If there is an educational need that only an occupational therapist practitioner can address, then OT may be considered by the IEP team as a related service on the student’s IEP.
The disability or diagnosis alone does not determine the need for educationally necessary occupational therapy. The IEP team will need to consider the impact of the child’s disability on their education.
