Signs Your Child May Be Having Trouble with Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills involve the small muscles in the hands and fingers. These skills help children do things like hold a crayon, use a spoon, or button a shirt. Some signs that your child may be having trouble with fine motor skills include:

  • Struggling to pick up or hold small objects (like crayons, blocks, or snacks)
  • Having trouble using a spoon or fork, or spilling food often
  • Difficulty stacking blocks or putting together simple puzzles
  • Not being able to draw simple shapes or color within the lines, compared to other children their age
  • Avoiding activities like drawing, coloring, or crafts
  • Using their whole hand to hold crayons or pencils after age 3, instead of using their fingers
  • Having trouble with buttons, zippers, or tying shoelaces, even after practicing
  • Dropping things often or having trouble picking up small items
  • Using one hand much more than the other before age 2

Ages 2–6 Years

Fine Motor Milestones:

2 Years

  • Builds a tower of 6–7 cubes
  • Turns pages of a book one at a time
  • Scribbles spontaneously
  • Begins to imitate vertical and circular strokes
  • Uses spoon and cup with minimal spilling

3 Years

  • Builds a tower of 8 or more cubes
  • Copies a circle
  • Draws a person with 2–3 body parts (e.g., head and legs)
  • Uses scissors to make snips in paper
  • Turns door knobs and unscrews lids
  • Strings large beads

4 Years

  • Copies a cross and square
  • Draws a person with 3+ body partse
  • Uses scissors to cut along a straight line
  • Begins to use a tripod grasp for writing instruments
  • Buttons and unbuttons large buttons
  • Manipulates small objects with improved dexterity

5 Years

  • Copies a triangle and other geometric shapes
  • Draws a person with 6+ body parts
  • Prints some letters and numbers
  • Cuts out simple shapes with scissors
  • Dresses and undresses independently (may need help with small fasteners)
  • Ties a knot

6 Years

  • Ties shoelaces
  • Prints first name and simple words
  • Colors within the lines
  • Uses a mature pencil grasp
  • Cuts complex shapes accurately
  • Completes puzzles with small pieces
