Practical Sensory Strategies for Home

  • Create a Sensory-Friendly Space: Use soft lighting, calming colors, and comfortable seating to help your child relax.
  • Offer Movement Breaks: Regular physical activity (jumping, stretching, swinging) can help regulate energy and attention.
  • Use Visual Schedules: Predictable routines and visual cues reduce anxiety and help children know what to expect.
  • Respect Preferences: Allow your child to choose clothing, foods, or activities that feel comfortable to them.
  • Model Calm Responses: Show your child how to manage sensory discomfort (“This noise is loud, let’s cover our ears together”).

When to Seek Occupational Therapy

If sensory processing challenges are interfering with your child’s daily life, learning, or relationships, an OT can provide a comprehensive assessment and targeted support. Early intervention helps children build confidence, independence, and resilience.
